Presidential intervention is underway at the Jubilee House with the matter of Asamoah Gyan’s sudden retirement from international football prominent on the table as AFCON 2019 nears.
Ghana head coach, Kwesi Appiah’s decision to re-designate Gyan’s role within the Black Stars team was not properly accommodated by the former captain of the side who responded by announcing his retirement from the national team.
Gyan’s dramatic reaction to news of his faded role within the team as the technical team decided to reshuffle the leadership of the squad has split public opinion, shifting Ghana’s preparation for the AFCON into a captaincy debate.
The matter has drawn executive interest, with President of the republic primed by the issue and keen to intervene. A meeting between the handlers of the national team and the handlers of the State is upon us as the sports ministry with handlers of the national team are headed for engagements at the Jubilee House with the President keen on the matter.
It will be recalled that President Nana Akufo-Addo called Gyan and Andre Ayew to a meeting at the presidency last year in a bid to reconcile them as part of plans to win AFCON 2019 after a 37-year wait.
