Mayor of Accra Adjei Sowah has described as irresponsible on the part of citizens when it comes to littering stating that nobody cares when it comes littering in the country.
The mayor hinted that, bins placed at various point within the metropolis are stolen by unknown persons while others dump domestic waste into the bins, a phenomenon which causes great sanitation challenge to the Accra Metropolitan Assembly.
The Mayor was speaking exclusive in an interview on Starr Fm monitored by Ghana Crusader.com. Mr. Sowah stressed that, the president’s call for the populace to be citizens and not spectators borders on the ability to take pragmatic steps to be responsible and not to talk.
“Citizens must be responsible and must fight for the type of city they want” he added
Touching on some strides made by the Ministry of Sanitation, the city boss made it known that, “4000 bins have been procured by the Ministry, of which 2000 have been placed at vantage points in the Accra and the others will be spread across the other regional capitals”.
The AMA chief further stated that, the city was ranked as the 7th dirtiest in the world due to open defecation, but the country had support from the World Bank to deal with this situation.
“Accra was ranked the 7th dirtiest city due to open defecation. Ghana had support from World Bank to construct household toilet so government takes 70 percent and household takes 30” he said
