The Technical Director of the Ghana Cycling Federation, Shaaban Mohammed, has been appointed as the new Secretary General of the West African Cycling Union-(WACU),in Burkina Faso on the 28th of June, 2018.
The historic meeting saw huge dignatories from neighbouring west African cycling powerhouses including Burkina Faso, Niger, Nigeria Benin and Ghana in attendance.
The meeting,which was graced by a high powered delegation from ECOWAS,and initiated by the affable Ghanaian Technical Director,Shaaban Mohammed, was primarily held to revive the fortunes of the sport in the west African region.
An interim management was formed to champion the course of the West African Cycling Union (WACU).
The committee included Captain Sawadogou of Burkina Faso as the President, Chief Massari of Nigeria as the vice President, Shaaban Mohammed of Ghana as the Secretary General and Mr. Hazoume of Benin as it’s treasurer.
The interim management members were tasked to organize a stage event from Lagos to Cotonou after the Tour du Faso between November and the first week in December 2018.
The West African Cycling Union were also tasked to solicit for sponsorships to augment its programmes.
Among other things the committee were to work on a roadmap for its drive activities, secure a workable calendar, adopt a moveable strategy in it’s operations, devise adaptable budgets for its activities and locate routes for its road race programmes.
In a similar development, the committee had another successful meeting with the Minister of Sports in Burkina Faso who promised to support the idea of reviving the ECOWAS Tour.
The last time the ECOWAS Tour was held was in 2013 encompassing 5 west African countries who cleared the regional barriers from Nigeria to La cote divoire.
