Former Ghana international Michael Essien will re-unite with former Chelsea team-mates Didier Drogba and Ricardo Carvalho in competing for the Soccer Aid World XI against Joe Cole’s England XI on Sunday 16 June, at Stamford Bridge.
The former BBC African footballer of the year who scored 25 times in 256 Chelsea appearances between 2005 and 2014, said: ‘It is a joy to be returning to Chelsea and play in front of a big crowd at Stamford Bridge – it feels like I’m coming home! The Soccer Aid World XI is looking strong, especially with my old team-mates Didier Drogba and Ricardo Carvalho. It is a privilege to be able to play in Soccer Aid for Unicef and help children in danger around the world.’
A host of athletes including Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt and Britain’s Sir Mo Farah,Frank Lampard’s cousin, Jamie Redknapp will all be participating in the game.
Harry Redknapp, will be managing the England team alongside TV host Susanna Reid, while Sam Allardyce and Piers Morgan will all be on the side of the World XI team.
Essien currently plays for Azerbaijan side Sabail FC.
