Nana Kofi Oppong-Damoah, Head of Communications for the Energy and Power Ministry has been dragged before a Madina District Magistrate Court over his failure to pay electricity bills to the tune of GH¢19,219.98.
The accumulated amount covers a period of two years for Salem Estates facility he occupied after which he failed to pay and allegedly vacated.
Owner of the said property Sylvia Afari–Sefa, wife of one Dr. Afari–Sefa revealed that several attempts to have the former Customs Officer settle his indebtedness proved futile as he refused to respond to invitation by officials of the rent control.
According to her, Nana Kofi Oppong-Damoah made a part payment of GH¢5,000 with an outstanding GH¢14, 219.98 aside from water bills of GH¢3,800.
The government appointee admitted in open court of owing and pleaded for time to offset the outstanding balance.
Meanwhile, the judge has referred the matter to Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) for settlement.
“There you will have enough time to explain yourselves and come out with an amicable settlement. Whatever, you agreed on is binding on the Court because the ADR has the powers of the Court to adjudicate cases. The final agreement reached by both parties will have to be signed by you and be brought back before me for adoption by the Court”, the judge directed.
