Istanbul Basaksehir striker, Emmanuel Sheyi Adebayor, has hinted he might not be playing for the Togolese national team again, following the team’s absence from the next edition of the Africa Cup of Nations to be staged in Egypt.
The former Arsenal ,Tottenham ,Real Madrid and Manchester City player led Togo to its first and only World Cup appearance in 2006. The Hawks were beaten 2-1 by their neighbours Benin, in a qualification decider during the international break. Following the defeat, Togo will not make it to the 2019 AFCON, with that spot sealed by Benin.
The 35 year old was on the score sheet for his country but that was not enough to aid his side to Egypt 2019. He has spent 19 years with the national team and has been looking back at the years since making his debut in 2000.
“It’s a lot. It’s beautiful. There were ups. There were downs. There were regrets. There were unforgettable moments,” the Istanbul Basaksehir forward told Radio France International after the game in Cotonou.
“Now, I think I’ll go home. I will take all the good times. I will put them in a bag. I will go to Istanbul quietly. And I’ll see what the future holds. I did everything to keep the jersey this afternoon.
“And, if it’s the end of a cycle, so be it. The most important thing is that I keep the shorts, the jersey and the socks.
“I promised my daughter, now 8 years old, that my last club jersey and the one in selection would be for her. I think she already had to send me a message: “Dad, and the shirt? ”
“For the moment, we are not going to talk about my end of career. We will not talk about the elimination of Togo.”
Adebayor has 87 Caps for Togo, scoring 32 goals over 19 years .He has also been at four AFCONS (2002,2006,2013 AND 2017).
