A member of the opposition National Democratic Congress legal team, Abraham Amaliba has questioned the allegiance of the Ghana’s Electoral Commissioner Chair, Jean Mensah citing that she is bed with the ruling New Patriotic Party.
Mr. Amaliba in an interview on Starr Fm monitored by Ghana Crusader, stated that, the EC due to the circumstances which got her the position makes her feel indebted to the NPP and not the people of Ghana.
“the circumstances under which Jean Mensah was appointed makes her feel she owes her allegiance toand not to the people of Ghana”.He said
Mr. Amaliba was speaking on the change of the voter’s register which was announced by the EC chairperson . In a rather sharp deviation from the what the EC chairperson has put out about the change of the voter’s register, the renowned lawyer hinted that, the move is to disenfranchise most Ghanaians;
but he was quick to add that “NDC has plans to file a suit against this new register which will disenfranchise most Ghanaians”. However, a National Communication Officer of the NPP, Richard Ahiagbah who was speaking on the same platform, believes that the voter’s register needs a new life, hence the NDC in this regard must put their suggestion to the table and not to hamper the move taken by the EC.
“I think we should breathe new lives into the EC. We should suggest to them things that will help them progress and not the other way round. The NDC is not being honest”. He said
The Electoral Commission on March 27, 2019 in a press release stated their willingness to change the current voter’s register This according to the EC was in consultation with the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC)
