Kumasi Asante Kotoko made a huge statement to qualify for the knockout stage of the Caf Confederation Cup following a slim win over Zesco United on Wednesday.
The Porcupine Warriors scored twice in the first half to defeat the Zambians 2-1 in Kumasi. This was the second group game with Kotoko losing the first game in Sudan against Al Hilal. Goals from Kwame Bonsu and Emmanuel Gyamfi were enough to ensure that Kotoko nicked the maximum points at stake.
It was goalkeeper Felix Annan who was the hero of the day, saving a penalty in the first half to prevent any scare of a comeback from the Zambians. Zesco’s Osumanu pulled one back in the 73rd minute but that wasn’t enough to salvage a point for the visitors.
Kotoko’s win over Zesco means the Zambians have now lost their first game on West African soil in three years. The result means the group is now wide open with all four teams tied on three points.
