The Atuabo Gas plant in the Western region, supplying gas to power Ghana’s thermal plants has been shut down. New owners of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Power Distribution Services in a statement a while ago said a deficit in generation gap has forced it to cut electricity to Accra and Tema.
PDS says the shut down will take effect immediately from 6am today to 7pm in the evening. The company further says it may review the timeline to bring back the lights should some positive news of the generation gap be received from power generators.
Ghana Grid Company Limited owes Ghana Gas billions of cedis of gas supplied but payment not effected. Ghana Grid has also claimed ECG has been unable to settle some debts, hence its inability to settle outstanding financial commitments to Ghana Gas.
Ghana’s energy sector is bedeviled with protracted layers of debt cycle and the authorities seem not to know how to wrap their heads around it.
