Former president Jerry John Rawlings has advised new world champion Richard Commey to stay focused and not to womanize, drink or smoke. The former Ghanaian leader made this known when Commey presented his IBF world lightweight to him on March 13, 2019, in his office at Ridge.
In congratulating Commey over his achievement, the former president cautioned him not to allow the victory to get into his head.
“Get a grip of yourself. It’s always easy to let your guard down when you get to the top. As an award-winning fighter pilot, I never allowed it to get to my head.
I always felt there was something to learn. That’s the way it has been to this day,” Rawlings said as he counselled Commey. The former president, himself a boxing enthusiast, told Commey not to be over-confident or under-confident, urging him to work harder every time.
“Avoid drinking, smoking and womanising and hold yourself well so you can reap the fruits of your labour,” he said.
Commey became Ghana’s ninth world champion when he stopped Russia Isa Chaniev in round 2 on February 2, 2019, in Texas to claim the aforementioned belt.
