AFCON 2019: Uganda Pegged Back By Determined Zimbabwe


Uganda failed to go to claim maximum points and stretch their lead in the Group A after they survived a scare to settle for a 1-1 draw with Zimbabwe.

Uganda started the match well, on the right foot and took the lead after just 12 minutes of play through Emmanuel Okwi. However, just before half time, Khama Billiat leveled the score for his side, a goal which earned Zimbabwe first point of the tournament.

Coming from a 2-0 win over Congo in their first match, Uganda were seemed in be motivated in the early exchanges of the game against a determined Zimbabwe which lost their first match by a solitary goal to hosts Egypt.

Cranes took the lead in the 12th minute through Emmanuel Okwi whose strike with his right foot beat George Chigova from close range.

With five minutes remaining to half time, Zimbabwe were level through Khama Billiat. A foul was committed on the left side of the box of Uganda. The ball was delivered to the left wing which met Ovidy Karuru on the run, he squared the ball to Billiat who put the ball past Dennis Onyango.

The draw now means Uganda are on top of the Group with four points, one behind host Egypt who later take on Congo starting from 11:00 PM EAT. Congo are without a point after losing their opener to Uganda.
