Despite Ghana’s thorough dominance for virtually the entire game, the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia have knocked out The Black Stars after winning 5-4 on penalties in an AFCON 2019 last 16 game.
The match ended 1-1 in regulation time after Taha Yassine Khenissi got the North Africans ahead, only for substitute Rami Bedoui to header in an own goal on 90 minutes.
The match proceeded to extra time but the two sides still could not be separated after two 15 minute halves.
It would be the cruel lottery of the penalty shootouts that would force the winner. After both sides scored three excellent penalties each, it was Ghana’s Caleb Ekuban who saw his penalty saved by substitute goalkeeper Farouk Ben Mustapha.
Ferjani Sassi stepped up to take Tunisia’s final spot kick and he made no mistake to put Tunisia into the last eight of AFCON 2019.
The Carthage Eagles will now face the inspirational Madagascar for a quarter-finals battle.
