AFCON 2019: In-Form Kotoko Forward Abdul Fatawu To Be Rewarded With Ghana Call-Up

Rampant Asante Kotoko SC goal monger Abdul Fatawu Safiu could be handed his first international call-up by coach Kwesi Appiah ahead of the 2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt.

The Porcupine Warriors attacker has been in a fine form under the auspices of CK Akonnor, bagging in some 8 goals in competitive games for the Reds. He backed his performance with three goals and provided two assists in the CAF Confederations Cup before the team exited in the group stage.

History has it that, many players failed to glint in their maiden season with Asante Kotoko but that is not the case for a certain Abdul Fatau Safiu. He has splendidly hit the ground running for Kotoko and carrying the team flamboyantly on his shoulders.

Fatawu’s performance unambiguously has been impeccable, outstanding and immeasurably for the Baba Yara based outfit. Sources close to indicate that the Techiman-born forward would be named in the Black Stars travelling squad for the Africa Cup Of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt later this year.

For many, it will certainly be seen as a deserved call-up given Abdul Fatawu’s instrumental role in Kotoko’s Normalization Committee’s Special Cup bid. His relentless pestering of opposition defences, tireless work rate and sheer persistence have been key to the Red’ pressing from the front.

The 24-year-old free kick expert netted Asante Kotoko’s first goal in the NC Special Cup against Aduana Stars in Kumasi followed by his two free-kick goals against his former club Eleven Wonders.

His knack of scoring important goals wouldn’t stop there, he scored twice against AshantiGold in Kumasi.

After the 2-0 victory over the Miners, Fatawu would again make the headlines in the Porcupines’ next fixture.

In a mad 90 minutes, Bechem United’s took the lead from the spot in the first half, before Kotoko raced up the other end of the pitch. Abdul Fatawu last gasp goal from the spot earned the Reds a crucial point.

The former Inter Allies would be joined in the team by his teammate, Felix Annan and one other player yet to be disclosed.

Coach Kwesi Appiah is expected to name his final 23-man-squad before June 10, 2019, ahead of the African Football Mundial in Egypt.
