Algeria are the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations Champions after a 1-0 win over Senegal in the final held on Friday 19, 2019.
Even before the game could settle, Algeria took the lead in the second minute through Baghdad Bounedjah. The striker was to wade off a challenge from Gassama, dashed forward to release a shot that took a huge deflection off Sane; the ball looping over the keeper and into the empty net.
The goal seemed to have given Senegal the urge to push for an equalizer but nothing was forthcoming from their midfielders in releasing their attackers this despite Sadio Mane making good runs for his teammates.
In the 37th minute, Niang’ almost restored parity from 20yards as Senegal pushed but his drive would only miss the target by a whisker as Algeria survived the first half onslaught as they headed into the tunnel in the lead.
In their bid to add firepower in attack, Senegal was to introduce Diatta for Ndiaye early in the second half.
Their constant knocking almost awarded them a penalty on the hour mark with the referee pointing to the spot after Sarr’s cross seemed to have knocked Guedioura hands but after VAR review, the decision was over rulled.
The second half was being dominated by Senegal with and Sabalay was unlucky to restore parity in the 67th minute with his shot being tipped over for a fruitless corner by the Algeria keeper Rais.
Despite all the pressure in the second half from Senegal, Algeria was able to hold on to win the 2019 showpiece.
