Partey Elated With BBC African Footballer Of The Year Nomination
Atletico Madrid and Black Stars midfielder Thomas Teye Partey , says he feels honored to be shortlisted for the 2018 BBC African footballer of the year award.
The 25-year-old midfielder had an explosive year with club and country and that has landed him a place in one of the most prestigious award categories on the African continent.
Born in Odumase-Krobo in the Eastern region of Ghana and rising from playing on the dusty pitches to the evergreen smooth surfaces across the world means a lot to the lanky midfielder. With such an amazing trajectory and beautiful story, a lot of young African footballers are already inspired by Partey’s rise in football.
His versatility on the field has been one of his greatest weapons,an asset manager of Atletico Madrid, Diego Simeone, can’t afford to lose anytime soon.
Through a blend of dedication and the right guidance,Partey has risen to become one of the most influential players for both club and country. He has been one of Ghana’s most consistent performers in Europe over the past three years, making the finals of the UEFA Champions league and winning the Europa League and UEFA Super Cup with Atletico Madrid.
The BBC revealed a 5-man list last Saturday for the African Footballer of the year Award and the Ghana international is among a host of top African players battling for the gong.
Discussing his impression about the award nomination with Ghanacrusader.com, Partey described his nomination as a very positive phenomenon in his life and sees it as a recipe to work harder in his career.
“I feel very great and honored to be part of the final list.Great players have won this award before and it is a big privilege to be part of the list”.
“I believe in hard work and I know this would not be the stopping point.I still want to work harder all the time to achieve more”.
Early this year, the Sports Writers Association of Ghana(SWAG) awarded the 25-year old player as the Best foreign-based player in Ghana. He also won the Best Footballer of the year award at the maiden edition of the Ghana Football Awards.
The Ghana international aided Atletico Madrid to a second-place finish in La Liga last season and winning the Europa League as well.
He also captained the Black Stars in friendlies against Japan and Iceland in the summer and is already a regular starter in the team.
With 6 goals in 18 appearances for Ghana’s senior national team, the powerful central midfielder would be looking to guide Ghana to its first African Cup of Nations trophy since 1982 when the team finally confirms qualification to the 2019 AFCON to be staged in Cameroon.
Reigning BBC African footballer of the year, Mohammed Salah and his Liverpool team mate Sadio Mane lead the pack , with Juventus and Morocco Centre back Mhedi Benatia and Senegal’s Kalidou Koulibaly making the other places.Thomas Partey is the final figure in that list.
