Blame Galamsey menace on regulators: Environmentalist

An Environmentalist with A ROCHA Ghana, an NGO, Deryi Bossu, says the galamsey menace should be blamed on regulators like the Minerals Commission.

He said the commission is mandated by the Lands and Forestry Ministry to check the activities of those involved in mining.

Mr. Bossu, said the over reliance on politicians and the failure to pay attention to issues like galamsey is what the country is paying for now.

Mr Bosu, said the current posture of President Akufo Addo is what has awakened the national consciousness on the dangers posed by galamsey.

He however said the three week ultimatum given by the Minister is too short.

The Head of Small Scale Mining at the Minerals Commission Kofi Tetteh however, said the three week period is practicable.

He said the Commission is already fighting the activities of illegal mining and the three week ultimatum can yield some positive results.

An Environmental Journalist Joyce Gyekye, said the involvement of the media coalition in the fight against galamsey is in the right direction, though some media houses have long been involved in the fight.
