2017 Valentine: World Marks Saint Valentine’s Day Today

It is observed on February 14 each year and in many countries around the world when “Lovers” exchange cards, gifts, flowers and chocolates with their special ‘valentine’

Its nine years since Ghana adopted the day as chocolate day.

This is to deepen patriotism and patronage of Ghana made chocolate.

St. Valentine’s Day began as a liturgical celebration of one or more early Christian saints named Valentinus.

According to history, very few facts are known about St. Valentine.

He was said to be a priest in Rome who was martyred.

His ministry was to help the Christians to escape persecution, and to provide them the sacraments, such as marriage.

The Roman Emperor Claudius II supposedly forbade marriages of soldiers in order to grow his army, believing that married men did not make for good soldiers.

Contemporary the Valentine’s Day is connected mainly with romantic love.

The modern Valentine’s Day customs developed in early modern England and spread in the 19th century.

The customs include sending cards, flowers, chocolates to one’s beloved. Paper Valentine cards became so popular in England in the early 19th century that they were assembled in factories.

The day is when people show their love and affection for another person, usually in the form of cards, flowers, gifts and messages.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s president has denounced St Valentine’s Day, saying the festival has no connection with Pakistani culture and should be avoided.

President Mamnoon Hussain told students that it was a Western tradition and conflicted with Muslim culture.

His remarks came after a district in north-western Pakistan banned Valentine’s Day celebrations.

It is said that Valentine’s Day is popular in many cities in Pakistan, but religious groups have denounced it as decadent.
